IF YOU'RE into rocks, minerals and that sort of thing, or if you would just like to learn more about the mining industry in Jamaica, now is your chance.
The National Minerals Fair and Symposium kicked off, yesterday, at the Mona Visitors' Lodge, University of the West Indies, St. Andrew, and will continue today.
The event is part of a series of activities marking National Minerals Week (June 18-23), which is being observed for the first time this year.
At yesterday's opening ceremony, Victor Cummings, Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Land, highlighted what he said was the tremendous potential of the local minerals industry. He said that because of this potential, the Government was committed to do what it could to develop the sector.
Among the entities participating in the fair are Lydford Mining Company, National Land Agency, Jamaica Premix Limited and the Forestry Department. Mr. Cummings said mining interests needed to ensure that they continue to pay close attention to environmental issues as they carry out their work.
