THE EDITOR, Sir:I AM a 'George's boy' - blue and white run through my veins. My father went to 'George's', his father went there, several of his brothers and probably cousins, as did several of my cousins in and around my time at the institution.
St. George's College is one of, if not, the finest institution this country has produced historically, ranking among other great all-boys schools like Jamaica College, Kingston College, Munro and Wolmer's.
I do believe that the country should try to fight to keep these 'monuments of a school' at a high standard. I believe that in trying to 'level the playing field', instead of raising those other (non-traditional) schools to the level these (traditional) schools are/were at, we have opted to try and bring these 'monuments of a school' down.
This is why, controversially, I have nothing against a female principal at my school. Just as how for the first time there is a female Prime Minister in the country, I guess there can be one at an all-boys school.
But this must not be just for 'show', because now is the time for it. It must be because this person can make a change. As with anyone else anywhere, her (a female principal at a boys' school) maintenance of the position is based on evaluation of her performance. Change can be good, but if that does not work ...
I am, etc.,
