THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN A recent visit to your wonderful country, I saw that there are attempts to change your Charter of Rights and strong laws against abortion. Out of the great respect I have for your society, I must say with alarm that Jamaica is at a most dangerous crossroads in its history. I hope that you may learn a lesson from your American neighbour.
The change of the concept of 'rights' in our legal charters in the '60s and '70s occasioned an unprecedented moral collapse. This is important for your moral society to understand, as your Parliament gets set to vote on a new Charter of Rights. For example, 1950s America was permeated by a universal Christian spirit in public and private life until 1962 when our Supreme Court literally outlawed prayer and bible reading in public schools. From that point on, the moral degradation began.
In the next two decades, nearly every one of the 50 American states eliminated laws against buggery. Thus, was born a homosexual movement which has succeeded in obtaining special rights for their immoral lifestyles, including the adoption of children, health and welfare benefits and homosexual 'unions' in many states. Increasingly they demand more rights and accuse anyone who stands in their way of 'discrimination'. Because of this and many other factors, the devastation to the American family has been incalculable.
Another Supreme Court decision in 1973 said that unborn children were not 'persons' under the law and imposed abortion on demand on 200 million Americans. We thought that the strong moral values of our people would prohibit its legalisation, but we were wrong. Rather, an elite few working in our government and courts gave America the most extreme abortion law in the world. As of this date, abortion has eliminated 47 million innocent children by 'safe' abortion, and there are no limits to this killing practice. In fact, even those who peacefully try to stop it are routinely jailed and harassed by police because, of course, abortion is 'the law of the land'.
Many Jamaicans are now saying that these same things could never happen to your society. Alas, that's what we said too, before the elite changed our charters without the consent of the common man. May God protect the moral citizenry of Jamaica from such changes!
I am, etc.,
