Charter of Rights committee to wrap up meeting soon
published: Wednesday | July 5, 2006

THE JOINT Select Committee considering the Charter of Rights Bill is aiming to wrap up its deliberations in time to submit a report to Parliament by the end of this month.

The committee will be meeting again on Thursday but chairman Senator A.J. Nicholson is unclear as to whether this would be the last meeting. "I am hoping it will be but that depends on the committee," he noted.

Since resuming meetings earlier this year, the committee has taken submissions from the Lawyers Christian Fellowship which was able to convince the committee that same-sex marriages should not be sanctioned. They have also heard from the National AIDS Committee which wants laws on the books to criminalise prostitution and for homosexual acts to be repealed. The Jamaica AIDS Support for Life, is also supporting this call.
