Portmore 'carrot' toll
published: Friday | July 7, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN THE toll stratagem, Portmore residents lost from the moment they joined a debate about fees. In this way Portmore was tricked into accepting the toll as legitimate, which it is not.

Now the highway bosses can simply start with a low fee and gradually jack it up over time to get what they want - with impunity, and government support.

GROSS ANOMALY

A one-mile toll road is a gross anomaly anywhere in the world. The truth is that the French needed a carrot to build Mr. Patterson his retirement millennium project. The government could not pay for Highway 2000 and so Portmore's 50,000 motor vehicles (the carrot) must be held captive. That, documents will show, is the deal.

Sadly, with bottlenecks already evident in the system, Portmore will gain little advantage in travel time than its one-way system already provides. All the same, we can all choose to sit in our vehicles and admire the pretty road while we suffer in silence. Or we can do something else.

I am, etc.,

GLEN McFARLANE
