New Parliament building up for discussion again
published: Friday | July 7, 2006

HAY-WEBSTER

THE ISSUE of a new Parliament building was again placed on the public agenda for discussion when Member of Parliament for South Central St. Catherine, Sharon Hay-Webster, lamented the lack of adequate facilities to carry out the nation's business.

In her contribution to the 2006/2007 Sectoral Debate in Parliament on Wednesday, Mrs. Hay-Webster said parliamenta-rians were using a building that was borrowed decades ago from the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC).

The limited facilities, according to her, have impacted negatively on the number of committee meetings held in the House.

"It will soon be 50 years since Parliament has existed and we do not have our own building, and these facilities that we have here are wholly inadequate," she stressed.

She encouraged her colleagues to take another look at the issue without a partisan approach. "I would want to hope that by the time we get to our 50th anniversary we are not celebrating that in this place."
