THE EDITOR, Sir:
Mrs Faith Websters's comment on the Amnesty International Report in the Daily Gleaner of June 23, is lame. Her "I don't know where Amnesty gets their information from" could have come from the recent address made in Parliament by Dr. Peter Phillips. There has been an increase of over forty per cent in reported cases of Carnal Abuse. Her comments are not only irrational but lack objectivity.
It is time for us to stop covering and protecting our desks and be prepared to bring pressure to bear where necessary in order that legislation be put in place to bring about the needed reforms. The country has been on auto pilot for the past two years and God only knows when we will return to responsible and responsive governance.
Women in Jamaica are very poorly treated at all levels of society and sadly, sometimes this is at the hands of other women. Where women are not the perpetrators, we are content to look the other way, especially where we are not personally affected.
This is our age-old problem which is worsening over time and it is my prayer that we will come together and be able to find new ways to address these atrocities.
I am, etc.
