NEVIS: Ruling party defeated at polls
published: Wednesday | July 12, 2006

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis (CMC):

THE OPPOSITION Nevis Reformation Party (NRP), led by Joseph Parry, won the Nevis Island election on Monday, denying the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) of Premier Vance Amory an unprecedented third straight term in office.

The NRP gained two seats to take its tally to three in the five-member island administration, while the CCM lost its four to one majority, capturing just two seats.

Amory had called the elections three months ahead of the constitutional deadline and had hoped the party's record in office would have helped it gained acceptance by the electorate.

The NRP had promised improved health care, reduction in the cost of living and better social programmes, especially for the youth and the elderly.

Preliminary results show that both Parry and Amory had won their seats in the election where there were 8,779 registered voters, up from 7,730 in 2001 polls.

Nevis is allocated three of the seven seats in the Parliament of the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts-Nevis.

The CCM holds two of those seats with the other going to the NRP, but those seats are not contested in the 'Nevis Island' elections.
