Pre-hospital care concern

THE EDITOR, Sir:I WAS pleased to read your Letter of the Day on Thursday July 13, asking the Government to address training for the various first responders that are involved in pre-hospital care. The letter also spoke to the implementation of a system where individuals from the police force can act as first-aiders responding to these situations. Essentially, the writer was appealing for proper pre-hospital care.
FULLY TRAINED OUT WEST
There is such a system in the western part of the island, where paramedics respond to the scene of accidents and are fully trained to deliver first-aid. The police officers and the firemen in Jamaica are also taught and should be equipped in performing basic life support. However, it is unfortunate that while there are a few private entities, we do not have a national paramedic system that would complement the actions of the first responders. This would replace the deeds of the 'good Samaritan' who may not have the expertise.
The need for proper pre-hospital care cannot be overstated and I hope the Government is listening and will take steps to implement one soon.
I am, etc.,
