Goodison gets permit
published: Saturday | July 15, 2006

Goodison

LONDON, England (CMC):

VETERAN JAMAICAN defender Ian Goodison will turn out for Tranmere in the English League One this season after he won an appeal to gain a new work permit on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Goodison's initial application was rejected but with the subsequent appeal proving successful, he has been granted a one-year work permit.

It means that Goodison, who returned to Jamaica following the expiration of his contract with Tranmere last season, will now suit up as the club chases an improvement on their 18th-place last season. Goodison, who has already played two seasons with Tranmere, is being viewed by manager Ronnie Moore as a key component in the club's set up this season, especially with his ability to play versatile roles at centre-back, left back and left midfield.

APPEAL

"We've put an offer into Ian Goodison and we are waiting for him to come back to us," Moore said last week before the appeal proved successful.

"Hopefully we can get him back on board. He can fill a number of positions for us and we need that."

Goodison is one of Jamaica's most capped players with over 100 starts for the national team.

He was a member of the history-making Reggae Boyz team that became the first English-speaking Caribbean team to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1998.

Goodison also had the distinction of captaining Jamaica to their first World Cup win against Japan.
