Portmore residents protest toll at vigil
published: Monday | July 17, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN:

HUNDREDS OF Portmore residents flocked near the Petcom Service Station in Portmore last night Saturday in a vigil to show their disapproval of the toll charge on them.

The group which was coordinated by Carol McLean held candles even during the power outage and transformed the place into a sea of light. They sang We shall overcome, They Got to Move, among other well-known songs. They also expressed the view that even though the toll road had been opened earlier, they remained resolute that they will be using the alternative route to show their disgust at the high toll imposed on them.

According to Ms. McLean the method employed by the authorities in the toll road issue was wrong and a message must be sent to those in authority that Portmore residents intend to deal with the issue to show their disapproval.

BOYCOTTING THE TOOL ROAD

Several other persons who spoke with The Gleaner vowed not to use the toll road unless there is a roll back. "We are just coming off a two-year wage freeze and this cannot be good for us to be imposed with this high toll when nothing is being done about our wages, and most Government workers live in Portmore," remarked Michael Bedward, one of those persons at the vigil.

Others were of the opinion that the idea of being a cash cow for the Government is just not in good taste. The toll booth was opened earlier and several persons were seen using the facilities.
