No to condoms in prison
published: Tuesday | July 25, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

There is much concern about distribution of condoms in our penal institutions by our health care givers. I am aware that the use of condoms is one of the methods of controlling risky behaviour in order to prevent HIV.

We also know that offenders may be there for the crime of buggery and to supply them with condoms, is like saying to them that it is okay to have sex. The concept of this is wrong and I am not in agreement.

I suggest that we try another method such as abstinence, in order to prevent the mayhem and loss of lives that took place in one of our maximum security institutions when this was first introduced.

The buggery charge is still on our books, and such practice is not in accordance with the law of this land.

I am, etc.,
