Special traffic system for Cricket World Cup 2007
published: Wednesday | July 26, 2006

THERE WILL be special arrangements made for the physically challenged who wish to attend the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, but able-bodied individuals are being encouraged to park and walk in order to avoid vehicular congestion in the vicinity of the stadiums.

In fact, it is expected that the Jamaica Local Organising Com-mittee (LOC) for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 will use a special traffic management system during the tournament which will see only emergency vehicles and vehicles carrying the teams, officials, media and sponsors allowed within a specified area.

"Between March and April next year and on match days there will be limited vehicular traffic in and around both venues as we will be instituting a park and ride system," said chairman of the Transportation Committee for the (LOC), Major Desmond Brown, yesterday.

Remote locations

"This means that spectators will park at remote locations and be shuttled or walk to the designated drop-off zones adjacent to the venues," he said.

Up Park Camp, the National Stadium, the UDC car park in downtown Kingston and National Heroes Park have all been identified as areas from which individuals can either walk from or be shuttled to Sabina Park.

However, the restriction of vehicles in the area is expected to be a major inconvenience for residents in the Sabina Park vicinity as on match days, without a ticket or an accreditation pass, individuals will not be able to get within a certain radius of the venue.

As a result the SDC has begun a comprehensive house to house and business to business survey in order to identify the number of residents and businesses in the area which will assist with the accreditation process.

A similar park and ride/park and walk system will be introduced at the Trelawny multi-purpose sports complex for the four warm-up matches and the opening ceremony. Like Kingston, four parking locations have already been identified.
