Talk to your children
published: Thursday | July 27, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

With reference to the Letter of the Day in The Gleaner, dated July 26, written by a Mr. Glenn Tucker, were he states, "Statistics show a very high level of sexual abuse and mental health problem in the Portmore area." I would ask: Where did these statistics come from? Why is he singling out the Portmore community?

Yes, most persons are professionals who work outside of the community; yes, we have children and yes, we have persons who are mentally challenged, but is he saying that this is not a similar trend in every community across the length and breadth of this island?

Let me use this medium to ask parents, please, please talk to your children, demonstrate the different touches that are normal and those that are not, talk to them about people in general and life, talk to them about what is acceptable and what is not.

I am sure that we can make a difference regardless of where we live, work, or the time that we leave home.

I am, etc.,

N. WHITNEY

Portmore
