LETTER OF THE DAY - Jamaica time now - not business as usual
published: Friday | July 28, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I am so weary of the bickering of political parties and their boasting of whom Jamaicans will pledge their allegiance to in the next general election. There was great excitement when Mrs. Simpson Miller won the party presidency for the ruling People's National Party (PNP). Many were shouting "is woman time now". I must, however, say that it is not woman time now; it has always been! Without us, the country, even the world, would be unbalanced. It is not PNP time, neither is it Jamaica Labour Party time. It is now Jamaica's time. The country has suffered enough from bad decisions, carelessness and waste. We can afford no more.

When one is elected as Prime Minister of a country, it is not about that individual, it is about the country. A person is elected to be Prime Minister; in other words first servant. Yes, they are elected to serve. It is now time that the well-being of the country be placed at the foremost of every decision taken by the Government.

Mrs. Simpson Miller has declared that she is appointed by God. She has already declared victory in the next general election. I hope that she will follow the example of Christ in serving instead of being served, crying out against the hypocrisy and corruption in high places, becoming unpopular in the eyes of many as she stands for right, forgetting about herself and make the sacrifices necessary to save Jamaica land we love, because if she does not, God will give another the task.

It cannot be business as usual; it is time to set our priorities straight. Pretty speeches and promises, charisma, smiles and kisses cannot save Jamaica.

I am, etc.,

KHAMICA BOGLE
