A bus operator was arrested yesterday following a joint operation between the Island Special Constabulary Force and the Transport Authority which uncovered a licence-tampering scam in the Kingston metropolitan region.
Petra-Kene Williams, communication and customer services manager at the Transport Authority, said the bus owner was arrested after presenting a copy of a road licence that was inauthentic. She said investigations are continuing into the matter and it is highly likely that additional arrests will be made.
Strong warning issued
The Transport Authority on Thursday issued a strong warning to operators of public passenger vehicles that if they operate their vehicles without road licences they are liable to be seized. Under Section 10 of the Transport Authority regulations, operators of public passenger vehicles are required to produce the original road licences for inspections upon request from the police or the authority's inspectors.
The authority also urged owners and operators of public passenger vehicles to ensure that original road licences are kept aboard while transporting passengers, as the police and the authority will not accept photocopies of licences.
