Pressure health department
published: Sunday | August 6, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

The JLP in recent times has got involved in varied domestic issues, some say to get political mileage. I, on the other hand believe that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) gets involved because they care, so I am seeking their help. I trust that they will attach the same importance to this situation in my community as they do to University of Technology tuition increase, Portmore tolls, White House scandals, and the police and nurse wage disputes.

My immediate neighbour (with small children) and a few other families that live close by, use my property and a vacant property across from me as the place to answer the call of nature. They have no toilet facilities and from all indication, they do not intend to get any. The matter was reported to the health department in Clarendon - several reports by phone and a visit to the office located on the grounds of the May Pen hospital. To date nothing has been done to have these families comply with the law and build toilet facilities.

health hazard

My neighbours would relieve themselves in (scandal) bags and deposit same over my fence. In other instances, they all would use the vacant lot as their latrine. Oftentimes dogs are seen tearing into these bags and soiled pampers, feasting on the waste matter. This poses a health hazard in the community. One would think a report of this nature would draw the urgent attention of the public health department in Clarendon. But no!!

I trust that the JLP can help and cause some pressure to bear on the department of health in Clarendon to account for their inaction in this matter.

I am, etc.,
