More than 1,000 volunteers are needed for Jamaica's hosting of matches during the Inter-national Cricket Council's (ICC) 2007 Cricket World Cup, according to information out of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
Matches will be held at the multipurpose sports complex in Trelawny and Sabina Park in Kingston, between March and April next year.
Vilma McDonald, coordinator of the LOC's volunteer programme, said that all Jamaicans who are able to offer their services should do so.
"It will re-quire two sets of volunteers, one set in Trelawny and another set for Kingston," Mrs. McDonald said.
She added that it was not feasible to move volunteers cross-country (King-ston to Trelawny and vice versa) and that the LOC was there-fore appealing to the residents of Trelawny, St. James, and the other adjoining towns and parishes to sign up.
"We are looking for in excess of 1,000 persons to be assigned in various areas of the event operations. This includes meet-and-greet, VIP and protocol services, media management, accreditation, ushers, queue busters, venue operation centre assistants, to name a few," Mrs. McDonald said.
According to Pauline Nelson, communications manager at the LOC, no event of the magnitude of the ICC Cricket World Cup can be effectively executed without the efforts of volunteers.
"The fact is, volunteers are the backbone of many mega events, be it the Olympic Games or the FIFA football World Cup," she said. "At the LOC, we know the capability of Jamaicans, their strong love of country and their willingness to offer their services."
