Downswell calls it quits
published: Wednesday | August 9, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

DOWNSWELL

WENDELL DOWNSWELL has resigned as head coach of the national senior and Olympic football teams.

Following meetings held last week between JFF President Crenston Boxhill and Downswell, the administration accepted a letter of resignation from the latter which took effect last Friday.

The coach had recently been widely criticised for a string of poor international results which began with a 5-0 loss to Australia and ended with a 6-0 trouncing of the national Under-21 team at the hands of host nation Colombia at the recently concluded Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC).

Decision

In between there was the infamous tour of the United Kingdom which saw the Reggae Boyz hammered 4-1 by Ghana and then 6-0 by World Cup quarter-finalists England. According to Boxhill, the decision was agreed upon by both parties.

"There was mutual consent. He has served well and I think he has done a fairly good job; in fact there was a time when he had a very good run as national coach," Boxhill said yesterday.

"However, with the results that we had been getting recently there was no way that things could continue the way that they were going," he said.

When asked about a replacement to fill the vacancy of national technical director, Boxhill indicated that an announcement regarding that issue would be made soon. Among the big names that have been reported to be shortlisted for the job is Jamaican-born and former English international John Barnes.
