Briefly if you will, step back in the not-too-distant past to 'Liguanea' - a home once owned by Ivan Ritchie Hendriks, situated at 106 Hope Road.
He was born in 1901, a businessman and joint managing director of Arthur Hendriks Furniture Co. Ltd. He was involved in poultry-keeping and mechanical experiments. Subsequently, the home changed hands and came into the ownership of supermarkets magnate John R. Wong.
John Robert was a general merchant and sole proprietor of John R. Wong. Born in 1914, his recreation included fishing and ichthyology (the scientific study of fish).
The Tudor-style house sat on the corner of Hope Road and Liguanea Avenue - now one of the 'Lost Houses' of Hope Road.
Before its demise, it was partly engulfed in fire and suffered some damage.
Rising from its ashes, and with new ownership of the property, is the
popular shopping complex, Sovereign Centre.
A window to the past has been opened, as we remember 'Liguanea' - may we cherish its memory.
