Registration at the University of Technology (UTech) could be affected today, as the Students' Union at the institution continues to demand a boycott.
The union says UTech students who have not yet paid their school fees should refrain from doing so, as the increase in school fees slated for the upcoming academic year is higher than was earlier reported.
Last month, the university said new students in the Faculty of Business and Management will see an increase of 21 per cent, while returning students from this faculty would pay an increase of 16 per cent.
All new students would pay a 20 per cent increase and other returning students would pay a 15 per cent increase.
However, the Students' Union says that there are discrepancies in the increases, as the announced hikes are not applicable to tuition fees only.
According to the Students' Union, students will face increases of up to 63 per cent for other aspects of their programmes.
The union said this increase will result in overall fees for returning students being hiked by 20 per cent, and up to 42 per cent for new students.
As such, the students are asking the institution to postpone the scheduled registration date for today to allow pupils to acquire the funds to make payments.
The union also says it is not ruling out any course of action pending a meeting with Education Minister, Maxine Henry-Wilson.
When contacted, Mrs. Henry-Wilson said while Government approves some of the proposed increases, the majority are internal.
"I don't know that it is going to benefit the students from not registering. I would say that they register and then try and sort out the issues as it relates to the payment of fees," she told The Gleaner.
