Member of Parliament Fitz Jackson demonstrates to his
constituents and postal staff that 'he's still got it'. Mr. Jackson handed over bicycles to the Greater Portmore Post Office on Thursday, August 10. - Contributed
Based on discussions with the community citizens' action group in the Greater Portmore area, Member of Parliament Fitz Jackson took the initiative to purchase bicycles for the post office that serves a major section of his South St Catherine constituency.
Postmaster at Greater Portmore Post Office, Cynthia Griffiths, is pleased to be able to resume quality mail delivery service to the area. Citizens have sought to have the cherished mail service more consistently and, therefore, through the community group, were able to have the minister's intervention.
At a brief ceremony held at that post office last Thursday, Mr. Jackson formally presented the bicycles to the administrators, stating that he recognises the value of citizens' groups in fostering a means to solving problems within communities. He added that the bicycle purchase is one aspect of his involvement with the Post and Telecommunication Department, as based on the variety of needs outlined to him, much more needs to be done.
In this respect, he gave his assurance that specific projects will be undertaken through his constituency office and that these are to be completed before year-end.
Mr. Jackson commended Sandra Senior-Brown, Jamaica Post's personnel director, who was instrumental in following up this project to completion, for her dedicated community service.
Speaking on behalf of the postmaster general, Monica Dunkley, the acting regional manager, Spanish Town, expressed appreciation for the gesture, and suggested that the MP may be able to influence his colleagues in Parliament to stimulate similar support for post offices in their communities.
She assured Mr. Jackson that the staff would care the bicycles and that this additional equipment "will truly enhance the timely and effective delivery of mail in the Greater Portmore area."
