TRINIDAD AND Tobago hammered St. Lucia by 299 runs in their West Indies Under-19 women's cricket match played at the Nelson Oval yesterday.
After winning the toss and electing to take first strike, the Trinidadians piled up a massive 314 for two off their 40 overs with opening batswoman Devika Singh smashing 137, which included 10 fours. She got good support from teammate Anisha Mohammed who made 103 with nine fours. Yasmine St. Ange was the only wickettaker for the St. Lucian's with 1-56 as the only other wicket to fall was by the run out route.
At their turn at bat, the St. Lucians were blown away for a paltry 15 runs in nine overs with the top score being six - made by Ashiene Edwards. The next best total was three by Zelone Lauavence.
Six St. Lucian women made ducks while Gantri Seetahal was the pick of the Trinidadian bowlers with 5-11. Felisa Walters claimed 4-2.
Coach of Trinidadian team, Marjoria Thomas, was delighted with her team's victory.
Happy with performance
"I am extremely happy with the performance of my team. They said they were going to win. They promised me that they were going to bowl out the St. Lucians for less than 20 runs and they did," Thomas said.
"This is the first team Under-19 that we have ever had two centurions in an innings and although we didn't have the highest total in the tournament, I am very satisfied," she said.
St. Lucian coach Emmanuel Bellas said his team was gaining from the experience.
"It is a learning process for my team because we all understand that these girls (T&T) have been in cricket for a long time," Bellas said.
"I am a bit disappointed that they didn't follow the instructions given to them in the dressingroom but I suppose that one can learn from that and when you see the mistakes it is obvious that you know what you have to work on to make the players get better," he said.
The Trinidadians have now completed their fixtures. That includes three wins and one loss to Barbados and they now await the result of the game between Jamaica and Barbados to see if they have any chance of winning this year's competition.
Those teams will do battle tomorrow at Elletson Road.
Today, Jamaica play St. Lucia at Jamalco.
