The Editor, Sir:
The Schools Environment Programme of JET, the largest environmental education programme in Jamaica, having spent approximately nine years in doing an excellent job in the schools, has been summarily cut. This project is about the youth and teachers of Jamaica who so desperately need to learn about their natural environment.
Funding from various sources, including the Ministry of Education, has been declining over the years. However, JET continued to do an excellent job with what they had. The Ministry of Education has advised JET that they will not be able to support them any longer, thereby ending the programme.
This letter is intended to share my voice in asking the Honourable Minister, Maxine Henry-Wilson, to reconsider the Government's decision in ending this programme. If we are to create paradigm shifts, allow the students and teachers to learn more about their natural environment, and ultimately cooperate with their environment, then the programme must continue. Let us learn all we can.
JET was recently invited by our organisation, Spanish Town Citizens Against Gun Violence, to give a presentation to our 'Healthy Lifestyle Programme'. We believe in JET's mission and invite you to learn more about them. All of Jamaica can benefit from them. Just visit them on the Internet or stop by their offices in Kingston.
I would like to join the many others who may be calling or writing this ministry. I invite all global agencies concerned with the environment who fund projects in this country to also let their voices be heard and intervene in the matter.
I am, etc.,
