Letter of the day - Believe it or not: RGD delivers on time!
published: Sunday | August 27, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

All my previous letters to the editor were prompted by my anger at ills/injustices observed in our society. For that reason, this letter seems rather strange to me as I'm writing to give praises for efficient and courteous service received from a public sector agency. Stranger still, is the fact that this particular agency is complained about in the various media EVERY DAY. even now as I write there is a heartrending story being told on the radio.

It was with a very heavy heart that I attended the RGD office on Trevennion Park Road in Kingston. My heart sank even further as I entered a full-to-capacity room. After a little wait, a staff member (wearing a green tie printed with a golf club!) asked if there was anyone seeking express service. I raised my hand and was asked to sit with other express service seekers. Shortly after, I moved up to a customer service station where my particulars were taken. I then proceeded to another agent to collect my 'printout' which I was asked to take to the cashier and pay $2,250.

On my way to the cashier, I read the printout and saw that my middle name was incorrect so I returned to the agent who had entered my particulars and got this corrected before paying the fee. I almost laughed out loud when I was asked for my address as the birth certificates "will be delivered tomorrow." I gave my address, but resolved not to hold my breath!

Shock and surprise

Imagine my total shock and absolute surprise when my documents were delivered the next day. I am sure though that if I hadn't spotted the mistake I would certainly have had a delay and might also have been phoning Mutty or Ronnie.

This letter, therefore, serves to advise those people applying for documents from the RGD to not only give accurate information, but also check that it is recorded correctly. My congratulations to the staff at the South East Regional Office of the RGD. Incidentally, I live in a hilly area where the post office doesn't deliver mail so the RGD has put them to shame!!

I am, etc.,

INGRID KING
