Where is our civic pride?
published: Tuesday | August 29, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

It is very sad that many Jamaicans do not have the civic pride as they once did.

I noticed on my visit last summer that many people do not try to maintain or preserve the infrastructure of Jamaica, whether it be personal or public property. As a child growing up, I remember a more distinct sense of community.

Most Jamaicans wait until they have migrated from Jamaica to wave our flag and be proud of our little dot on the map. Jamaica has done so much to influence the world and has produced so many prominent members of society in every corner of the world.

If more Jamaicans realised how much our culture is idolised and imitated (never duplicated) then they would perhaps take more pride in preserving our assets, not primarily for visitors to enjoy but for our future generation of Jamaicans. Walk good.

I am, etc.,
