Reggae Girlz vie for Gold Cup qualification

Jamaica's Reggae Girlz resume their road to China campaign, when they leave the island today for Trinidad and Tobago where they will participate in the final leg of qualification for the 2006 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup.

Jamaica racked up very impressive results in the last round in May, with a total of 9 points 27 goals and none against in three games. Led by striker Venicia Reid's six goals, the Girlz now turn their attentions to the second round of qualification which will run from the September 6-10. Jamaica have now been placed in Group B along with Bermuda and Haiti, while the Dominican Republic, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago have been placed in Group A.

The winners will progress to the 2006 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup along with Canada, Mexico, Panama and hosts U.S.A. for the November tournament. The U.S.A. and Canada received byes to the tournament after contesting the final of the 2002 Gold Cup.

The journey to China 2007 starts with qualifying for the 2006 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup. The Gold Cup will crown the CONCACAF Champion and also qualifies two teams to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup. The third-place finisher from the CONCACAF event will face an Asian team in a home-and-away playoff for the final berth to the FIFA tournament.
