GIBSON
The lingering thought of her mother's sacrifice to put her through school was the fuel that gave Shanea Gibson that extra push to do her best.
"I know she really works hard to put me through school and everything, and I thought that I would make her proud."
And she did. When her CSEC examination results returned, the white slip of paper showed the Ardenne High achiever had earned seven grade ones and one grade two.
She had received ones in physics, biology, French, English language, mathematics, food and nutrition, and information technology and a grade two for chemistry.
Her family was ecstatic
"They were like calling everyone and sending a bunch of 'please call me', running up their phone bill and they were saying they were going to have a celebration," Shanea said.
But they expected it because Shanea had prepared herself. She had studied hard and when her exams came she was ready.
"Every day when I came home after the exams they asked me how it was and I'm like' it's too easy'. I was worried about that because I was like,' CSEC easy?' so I'm thinking may be I'm taking it for a joke," she said.
Now CSEC is over, Shanea will turn her focus to her sixth form studies and then go on to the University of the West Indies, where she hopes to pursue a career in medicine.
"I always wanted to be one (a medical doctor) since I was six. You help people feel better," she said.
