Reno made it two wins from two starts in the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew NPL Football Competition yesterday afternoon when a second half strike by substitute Ricardo Scott gave them a 1-0 win over Wadadah FC in their western derby at the Frome Sports Ground, in Westmoreland.
"I thought we played a tactically disciplined game and although our opponents gave a good account of themselves, we were too good for them today," said Reno coach Aaron Lawrence.
The game, which was fast paced and exciting, started with Wadadah creating a glorious chance in the fourth minute. Skipper Daniel Rickettes won possession of a loose ball inside the goal area but a defender brilliantly dispossessed him before he could test goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr.
Changes
Midway the half Reno got and wasted back-to-back changes in the 30th and 34th minutes. Firstly, Kirk Wright slipped between two defenders and fired wide and secondly Nicoli Findlayson got away before the goal but cracked his left-footer over the cross bar.
On the stroke of half time Sean Thorpe all but gave Wadadah the lead when he got away before the goal and unleashed a powerful shot. The ball struck the hands of goalkeeper Kerr and ricocheted inches wide. The half ended 0-0.
Reno continued to attack in numbers after the break with Wadadah seeking to strike on the counter. In the 59th minute, Wadadah again came close when Rickettes controlled beautifully on the edge of the area but drove his shot inches over the cross bar.
Reno took the lead in the 61st minute when Wright clipped a superb pass into the path of substitute Scott. He spun around gracefully and slotted out of the reach of goalkeeper Gavin Barrett, making the score 1-0 and sending the Reno fans into a screaming frenzy.
