A record 35 entries have been received from 24 journalists for this year's Jamaica Broilers Group Fair Play Awards; up from a total of 22 sets of entries that were received last year. The winners will be announced this morning at a function at the Hilton Kingston Hotel.
Cash prizes for the winners have been increased by 50 per cent across-the-board with this year's Fair Play Award winners for both the print and electronic media categories set to receive a cash prize of $150,000, up from $100,000 last year. In addition, the first runner-up for print or electronic in the 2005/2006 awards will be presented with a cash prize of $30,000, while the second-runner-up this year can look forward to receiving $15,000.
The Gleaner's team of Leonardo Blair, Trudy Simpson and Patricia Watson copped the coveted award for excellence in print journalism last year for their investigative 10-part series on "Children Affected and Infected by HIV/AIDS".
Among the entrants this year is The Gleaner's investigative series "Church under Probe" by the team led by reporters Daraine Luton and Keisha Hill. The series led to the arrest of The Church Dayton's Diamond Ridge, deacon, Donovan Jones, 18 year-old James Rogers and Shamar Morgan and another 15 year-old school boy who were charged with sexually assaulting a 14 year-old school girl in the back of van driven by Jones. The incident was videotaped. The series generated massive public response and caused child legislation to be retabled and amended.
