Deborah Buchanan of Wolmer's High School for Girls in Kingston made her family and friends proud when she copped six ones and two credits (twos) in the 2006 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams.
"I was shocked. I folded the paper and opened it several times," she said of her reaction when she saw her results.
Deborah explained that she was worried about a few subjects and was therefore not expecting top marks for them.
She attributed her success to the extra classes that she attended, her parents Lynden and Prudence Buchanan whom she said were very supportive of her endeavours and her friend Nicolette who was also there for her.
Deborah is currently at Wolmer's sixth form where she is pursuing history, sociology and mathematics at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency (CAPE) level. After this, she will be going on to university to study law.
Guided by the philosophy, "do the best that I can do", Deborah said she is concerned that today's youth are not reading as much as they should.
She got ones for mathematics, English literature, English language, information technology, French, social studies and twos for history and principles of accounts.
