The Editor, Sir:I was travelling on Highway 2000 to Manchester last week Saturday, when my car developed a tyre problem. The right rear wheel blew out approximately two miles from the toll booth. I fitted a spare tyre which was a bit soft and needed air.
Having reached the toll booth, the clerk told me there were no facilities to inflate the tyre and this was confirmed by an attendant. He said the only thing he could do for me was to open a big gate, so I could walk approximately four miles to Old Harbour with the broken tyre to get it repaired.
Paying so much money
Now, if I am paying $180 to use a highway, why can't they provide a basic air pump if your vehicle needs it. Why are we paying so much money then? I had to drive very slowly on a deflated tyre all the way from the toll booth to Old Harbour, where I could get some help. What if it was in the middle of the night? What if it was a woman driving alone in the middle of the night, what would become of her?
As long as I am driving to the country, which I do every weekend, my hard-earned $180 will never be spent on that toll road. I am just letting all Jamaica know the things we the travelling public have to face on these so-called 'toll roads'.
I am, etc.,
