No regard for human life
published: Wednesday | October 4, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

In Jamaica we can all point to crime and talk about how the criminals have a wanton disregard for human life. Ironically, this wanton disregard for human life is being demonstrated more eloquently outside the bounds of criminality.

The Victoria Jubilee, a maternity hospital, and what should be the premier standard bearer for human life, is now being associated with death. According to a Gleaner report, a 41-year-old woman lost her baby as plans for a Caesarean section to deliver her child was put off three times due to a malfunctioning autoclave.

Beyond barbaric

Three times. This is beyond barbaric. In fact there is no other way to describe this than plain and simply mediaeval. I hope that this most unfortunate mother is planning to sue and that God will help her to stick with the lawsuit until some kind of justice is done.

According to another report, the elevator, in this a maternity hospital, has been malfunctioning for 26 years. How can this be acceptable in a civilised country? Are we a civilised people? All this seem to be shedding new light on why our children are growing up with this insatiable appetite to kill. They have been frustrated from inside the womb.

If indeed we as a people have any inkling of respect for life, all of us should do all we can to ensure that no stone is left unturned until the total situation is remedied.

I am, etc.,
