Golding moves no-confidence motion
published: Wednesday | October 11, 2006

Opposition Leader Bruce Golding yesterday moved a no-confidence motion against the Government in relation to the Trafigura controversy.

Mr. Golding moved the motion during the sitting of the House of Representatives.

The motion reads: "Whereas the circumstances in which this transaction was conducted constitute a glaring conflict of interest and possibly a violation of Jamaica and Dutch laws and calls into question the integrity of the Government, a number of ministers who have directly been involved in or have sought to justify this transaction.

And whereas the Government has shown greater inclination to protect the PNP from embarrassment than to ensure probity and transparency in the conduct of its ministers.

Be it resolved that this Honourable House declare its lack of confidence in the Government or in its ability to provide good governance to the people of Jamaica."

Motion to be debated

The motion was moved during Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller's absence. She, however, arrived later. The motion will be debated in the House next week Tuesday.

Last week, the Opposition made damning allegations about a $31 million transaction to an account with former Information and Development Minister, Senator Colin Campbell's signature.

The Government had claimed that the transaction was made in relation to a donation to the party. But this was denied by the company, which has since said it was a commercial transaction.
