( L - R ) Wright and Calloo
Khandae Wright of Mavisville Preparatory School retained the Kingston parish title yesterday in the 2006/07 Gleaner/Children's Own Spelling Bee competition.
Khandae bettered the visibly-fatigued Jovante Anderson of Jessie Ripoll Primary. Spellmaster Ivin Logan used the unseen words list after the Spelling Bee book was exhausted.
"It feels good to have won again. I wasn't sure I was going to do it so I was a little nervous," Khandae admitted afterwards. Her winning word was
'c-l-e-p-s-y-d-r-a', which is an ancient device for measuring time by the regulated flow of water.
Earlier yesterday, Monymusk Preparatory School returned to the top of Clarendon's Spelling Bee list when Rajdale Calloo became parish champion. Though only nine years old, Rajdale was confident.
"I was convinced by my parents and my sister that I would win," he said. Rajdale's winning word was
'o-m-n-i-v-o-r-o-u-s', which means the eating both animal and plant foods.
St. Catherine spellers compete today in Spanish Town at the Phillippo Church Hall starting at 10:00 a.m.
