Life's experiences can either make or break a person. Jermet Campbell is using her's to make her into a vessel of testimony and optimism.
Producers have been knocking on Campbell's door inviting her to join the secular market, but she is convinced that that is not the path she wants to take. So even though things may seem greener on the other side, she would rather stay in form rather than conform to what men want.
Campbell is a dance teacher, but is convinced that singing gospel music is more fulfilling. "It is something I always want to do and now I am ready," she said.
The budding solo singer already has her feet wet, since she sings back-up for one of Jamaica's top reggae gospel artistes, DJ Nicholas.
'God took me through'
Campbell grew up poor in a single-parent home after her father walked out on her and her mother. Things were fine initially until her mother became sick and was unable to work. She said it was not easy, but she had a relationship with God and that took her through her most trying hours. "Through God I was able to turn things around and make something out my life. He has blessed me and I am thankful," she said.
She is, however, sad that that her mother passed away before she could witness the outcome of all the hard work and prayer, as much of the earlier encouragement came from her. But the pieces are starting to fall into place as so far she has three singles out, Jehovah, Big Deal and Nah Fi Run.
Optimistic approach
She has been married for seven years and now has a child. "My husband is somebody I admire a lot. He pushed me even when I didn't think I could hold a note. I appreciate him in my life so much," she said.
Her now optimistic approach to life is providing much of a boost for what she believes she can accomplish. Campbell is determined to produce nothing but good quality songs. She also attributes some of her progress to DJ Nicholas. "I really believe this is something God wants me to do, since I have a message carrying. I tried a number of things but this feels right," she said.
She does not know what is in the future for her, but the sky is the limit. "I don't limit myself to Jamaica, I want to reach the world. I have a great passion for young people and there are many of them who need to hear the message," Campbell said.
