Whistle-blowing

The Editor, Sir:

Whistle-blowing is consid-ered anathema in all institutions.

Alas, our society is gripped in a code of silence at all levels; while the Police High Command calls for the common citizenry to step forward with 'what they know' in their communities, we decry the same actions of others when their exposure of any irregularities falls within our sanctified circles.

Corruption has the same stink, whether in circles high or low. While we smite our breasts over the breach of confidentiality in the banking sector, and its possible fallout resulting from Trafigura's 'gift' of J$31 million, it is critical that we remember that it is within the context of a disturbing string of scandals that this disclosure was made, and any vilification of this act of patriotism will ensure that other incidents of wrongdoing will remain uncovered, never to see the light of day. Could that be our objective?
