Tips on growing cabbage
published: Thursday | October 19, 2006

Cabbage may be grown throughout the year.

Ideal temperatures are cool moist climates and at higher altitudes. (In warmer months e.g. June-September there may be increased pest infestation).

Soil should be rich, sandy loam with good water-holding capacity, or light fertile soil with irrigation.

Land should be prepared by ploughing/forking thoroughly three to four weeks before transplanting seedlings.

In the nursery, seeds should be sown in seedbeds 20 cm (8 inches) apart, or in seedling trays.

Transplant four weeks after sowing seeds. Seedlings should be exposed to outdoor conditions, and water once instead of twice daily. Transplant in late afternoon to avoid exposure to intense sunlight. Water thoroughly before removing seedlings from nursery to minimise damage to roots.

Rows should be spaced 60cm (2 ft) apart and plants should be 45cm (18 inches) apart. Smaller heads need closer spacing.

Fertiliser should be applied in the ratio NPK 11:22:22 or 14:28:14 to the soil three or four days before transplanting: Recommended quantities 42g NPK fertiliser per plant.

Note: Cabbage absorbs a high percentage of nitrogen. At six to seven weeks, apply 42g Sulphate of Ammonia or 21g (3/4 oz) Urea per plant.
