Pick-9 heading for $8 million
published: Friday | October 20, 2006

The grey filly SAMARAONTHELOOSE (Paul Francis) gets up in the nick of time to pip JET SKI D'OR (Marklee Buchanan) by a head in the ninth race over the straight five course at Caymanas Park on Saturday. Trained by Gary Subratie, SAMARAONTHELOOSE was a 9-5 favourite. - Colin Hamilton/Freelance Photographer

Pick-9 fever should intensify an hour or so before post time at Caymanas Park tomorrow, what with a whopping $6.5 million carryover sweetening the pot.

After eluding punters for the past eight racedays, the Pick-9 could offer a payout well in excess of $8 million given the heavy betting anticipated.

The Pick-9 will be conducted from the third race scheduled to be run at 12:35 p.m., while the Super-6 will embrace races five to 10. We look at the Super-6, which gets under way with a three-year-old-and-over restricted allowance race for the Royal Crest Trophy over 1200 metres, to be contested by eight starters.

The one best equipped to pull it off must be the American colt TRIPLE ACCOUNT, which beat all barring PRINCESS SUE in a fast-run 1100-metre race, on October 7.

TRIPLE ACCOUNT looks nicely weighted with 51.0kg by virtue of apprentice Omar Walker's 4.0kg claiming allowance and at these weights, should win from BELLAS GATE BOY (Lasix now on) and MASANIELLO which was third to PRINCESS SUE on October 7.

Next on the programme is a three-year-old maiden race for the Clifford Grey Memorial Cup over 1300 metres and here, FIREWATER who was a beaten favourite (third) behind FREE FALL over 1100 metres on October 7 when slowly into stride, is tipped to recoup losses now better for the experience and the visor now fitted. FIRE D TRAINER and VERITY are twin dangers in the six-horse field.

Running consistently

In-form SIR KISSON LAL gets the nod over RISING MOON and SIR KNIGHT in the seventh by virtue of his consistency, while OLYMPIC STAR who was just touched off by YAHABIBI over the straight recently, is preferred to JETLYN'S DRAMA and YYESBABY in the eighth.

AD INFINITUM, who provided some close shaves for MIRACLE MAN in last year's Derby and St. Leger, should be good enough to stave off his late kicking stable-companion ALPHA LUPA and CHADMAN in the ninth for the Fontainbleu Trophy over 1500 metres, then close the programme with SPECIAL CAT (fitter) in the nightpan.

SPECIAL CAT failed by three-quarter length to catch HEZA RANKING over 1500 metres on October 4 and gets the nod over lightly raced RED CHRISTMAS and consistent LIBERTADOR.
