The Editor, Sir:
I have been observing in the daily papers and on television in recent times, Professor Trevor Munroe advocating for the state funding of political parties.
The Jamaican Constitution does not recognise political parties, thus on what basis should the taxpayers of Jamaica be called upon to fund these parties, bearing in mind the already heavy burden of taxation they are already carrying? Also, who will monitor the funding proposed and ensure the taxpayers get value for money from these same political parties? Are we proposing another committee or ombudsman to oversee the parties, at another cost to taxpayers?
In my humble opinion, the political parties should endeavour to carry their own load in the best way they can, with the resources at their disposal, using the minimum for maximum results.
I am urging all Jamaicans of goodwill, to let their voices be heard far and near against this proposal for state funding of political parties, before it is too late.
The extra money, if any, proposed for the funding of political parties, will be welcome to top up the budget for education or increase the pension paid to retired civil servants, especially those who retired since the 1990s and beyond.
I am, etc.,
