The Editor, Sir:
I read with interest the letter captioned 'Breast-feeding, but more maternity leave' published September 22. The writer is imploring Mrs. Lewis-Fuller to advocate for increased maternity leave.
Already Jamaican women seem to specialise in the overproduction of children. I live in the rural area and in the mornings, driving to work, there is hardly any space on the road to drive your vehicle because of children.
As all employers, I suffer from (and I know I speak for many employers) decreased income through the frequent payment of maternity leave. I've heard employers say they will reduce their intake of female employees for this same reason.
No employer needs to pay anyone for unproductive work in this day and age. It's difficult enough to keep one's business going. No employer needs to give anyone any reason to loaf at home.
If you ask me, I think it's high time the Government intervene and do something to curb the population explosion in this country. Yes to less breeding. No to increased maternity leave.
I am, etc.,
Country Woman
