Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield High School secured his first road race victory, while Areita Martin regained her title at yesterday's staging of the Hugo Chambers 10K held at Jamaica College (JC), Old Hope Road.
Campbell, running this race for the first time, crossed the line in 33 minutes and 10 seconds, while Martin, who won the event in 2003, took yesterday's race in 41 minutes and 54 seconds.
Though victorious, Campbell was not happy with his time.
"It wasn't a good time," he said. "I was looking to run about 30 seconds," he added.
Martin was also disappointed with the time, but happy for the win.
"It (race) was very difficult for me, I was cramped early in the race." I did not get the lead until I almost finished, I had to dig deep and came up with all my reserves to win this race.
Disappointed
"I think it's a slow time because I ran a sub-39 here already so I am really disappointed with the time, but I am glad that I won," explained Martin, who trailed Bellefield's Rose-Marie Aldridge in the last 400m.
Jamaica Defence Force's (JDF) Phillips Edwards finished second in 34:09 while Richard Barrett, running unattached, was third in 34.26.
In the female section, Aldridge was second in 42:11, while Nadine Henry crossed the finish line third in 45:08.
Both athletes thrived in the absence of top 'guns' Wainard Talbert of Lion Heart Track Club and Natoya Goule of Manchester High, who have been dominating road events so far this season.
Meanwhile, in the One-Mile Run which started in Papine and ended at JC, Romaine Hedman of Jamaica College took the male section in 4:56.43, while Felisha Chong of Christiana High won the female section in 5:37.51.
