Cops grill suspect in Berbick's killing
published: Tuesday | October 31, 2006

Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer

BERBICK

The main suspect in the brutal murder of former heavy weight boxing champion, Trevor Berbick near his home at Norwich district, Portland, was yesterday transferred to the Area Two Police headquarters in St. Mary where he will be interrogated.

Kenneth Bailey, Senior Detective Sergeant attached to the Port Antonio, Criminal Investigative Branch, said the male suspect, who is related to Berbick, was transported from Port Antonio yesterday afternoon.

"He will undergo a more intense interrogation," said the detective. According to Bailey, no one has been formally charged with the chopping death of the former boxing champion. He said "we are gathering as much evidence as possible, which will allow us to determine the facts for charges to be laid."

Crowbar handed over

Yesterday morning, a second suspect, who has been in custody since Sunday, reportedly took CIB detectives to a location at Ranch Hill in the Norwich community where the boxer was murdered, and handed over a crowbar, which was reportedly used to hit the former champion on the head.

The police had earlier recovered a four-foot long metallic pipe fitted with a clamp, which was also used in the murder. The pipe was recovered on Saturday near the murder scene with evidence of blood and what appeared to be flesh particle.

The boxer is believed to have been murdered between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Saturday, a day before he was scheduled to leave for St. Ann, where he was to be a ringside guest at a boxing tournament. The body, which had four chop wounds to the head, was discovered by a church deacon, who had gone to open the doors of the nearby Norwich Church of God Chapel, about 5:00 that morning.
