Danhai and area leaders released
published: Friday | November 3, 2006

Glenroy Sinclair, Senior Crime Reporter

After four days of intensive interrogation in relation to the spate of violence in the troubled Rockfort community of east Kingston, businessman Danhai Williams and area leaders Tony 'Tego' Brown, George 'Binero' Flash and 'Mandez' were released from police custody yesterday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Denver Frater said that there was not sufficient evidence to press charges against the men, stating that the investigation would continue.

Brown, Flash and Mandez were picked up on Sunday during a police operation while Williams was taken into custody on Tuesday night. The men were questioned about the violence which has intensified in the Rockfort community since September 23.

Attacks continue

But while a large detachment of military and police personnel has been deployed to the area since Monday, gunmen continue to launch attacks on residents and many have fled. On Wednesday night, residents reported that a loud explosion rocked sections of Rushden Road, leaving huge cracks in walls. It is alleged that gunmen threw dynamite into a house on Barnes Road. The house was badly damaged.

The conflict is centred around factions of Barnes and Rushden roads, Glasspole Avenue, Oliver Road and two sections known as 'Top Temple' and 'Hill Man'. Reports are a group of young men has vowed to not allow the older men to control the entire community as they did in the 1980s. They have armed themselves and are prepared to fight.

Residents said most of what is happening has to do with a man who was murdered a year ago. The brother of the deceased is reportedly intent on avenging the death.
