The issue of trans fats
published: Saturday | November 4, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I write to you pertaining to trans fats that are found in oil used by Kentucky Fried Chicken. The city of New York is now upholding the law by pressuring KFC to stop using oil containing trans fats. Trans fats are unhealthy to the human anatomy. It perpetuates obesity and increases bad cholesterol that will subsequently cause a heart attack in the future.

Trans fats are considered a health risk for persons not knowing what they are consuming.

According to studies done by health officials, food that is prepared at KFC contains 80 per cent trans fats.

Heart attacks in Jamaica are a major killer. The public needs to know from the operators here if their food is also laden with trans fats. It is not all about appealing to the human tastebuds, but healthy eating. It would be better to change the oil used, decrease health factors attributed to trans fat and having customers coming back for more. KFC should be aware and think about long-term effects of trans fats than providing immediate gratification to customers.

I am, etc.,
