Counselling sessions have been started at the Chetolah Park Primary School in Hannah Town, west Kingston, where the student population is now mourning the death of the assistant football coach/security guard.
The school, which has a population of 102 students, saw only 60 turn up for classes yesterday. This is believed to be as a result of the murder of the man who has been described as a kind-hearted and willing individual.
On Thursday, 36-year-old Derrick Lewis was shot and killed as the students prepared to play a football match at the football field behind the Tinson Pen Aerodrome, off Marcus Garvey Drive.
Lewis' 10-year-old son, and at least 50 of the students, were present at the time of the killing.
The school's principal, Iris Hollingworth, told The Gleaner that normal school activities were postponed as officials from both the Victim Support Unit of the Ministry of Justice, as well as the Guidance Unit of the Ministry of Education and Youth, spent at least four hours at the school yesterday speaking with the students, who were still shocked by the horrific incident.
Lewis' two children and their mother also received counselling.
