Time to rise up
published: Wednesday | December 6, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

This is an open letter to the Prime Minister of my beautiful country, Jam-aica. My concerns are also addressed to the Minister of Home Affairs.

Each day I read with trepidation of the continuing escalating criminal activities in the country. Law and order are out of control. The country has all but descended into a free-for-all, devil-may-care attitude, that the Government appears, in my view, to display in not acting to put its citizens' minds at ease. I feel the time has come for all law-abiding individuals to come together in their community and rise up to protect themselves against the lawless gangs that operate in our cities.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and opposition leader Bruce Golding, please come together and discuss the issue as a matter of urgency, as to effective measures and pragmatic solutions to address the breakdown of law and order.

I am, etc.,

M. NUNEZ
