published: Monday | December 18, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Several of the island's top juniors continued to battle for top spots as the Petcom Open Junior Tennis Championships continued at the Liguanea Club courts yesterday.

Boy's 18 action

In Boy's 18 action, top seed Tyler Chin continued to live up to his billing as he turned back rival Andre Burrell 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 to book himself a spot in the competition's semi-finals.

Chin will face Mckoy Malcolm who got the better of Orick Angus 6-2, 3-0, after Angus retired in the second set with a hamstring injury.

Gawayne Coxx also booked his spot in the last four of the tournament following an effortless 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Adrian Bruff.

Boy's 16 play

In Boy's 16 play Andre Burrell advanced to the quarter-finals of that event after leading top seeded Matthew Rodriguez 6-0 before the players retired in the second set. Winifred Weinbeer, in his first local match in months, picked up where he left off as he turned back Javier Mullings 6-0, 6-1 for his quarter-final spot.

Boy's 14 action

In Boy's 14 action top seed Jordan Harris became the first player to book himself a spot in the round of six when he swept by Nicholas Chung 6-1, 6-0.

Top seeded Brian Yapp Stam defeated Noah Stewart 8-6 for a semi-final spot. Number two seed Horatio Ludford joined the number one when he turned back Nicholas Hudson 8-6, while Nicholas Chambers defeated Nicholas Chung 9-8 (7-3).

In Boys 10 quarter-final action Simon Ho On defeated Andrew Bicknell 8-1, Zachary Husang slipped by Jabari Cole 8-5, Meshak Cole blanked Luke Roberts 8-0, while Luke Therriean defeated Roger Lyn by an identical scoreline.

Girls Open action

In girls Open action, top seed Shawneka Knight defeated Latoya Frankson 6-0, 6-1 in her quarter-final match and seems to be on course to set up a one versus two match-up between herself and number two Calisia Reid, who already booked her spot in the finals by beating Stephanie Swab 6-1, 6-0.

Girls 14 quarter-final play

In girls 14 quarter-final play, Sequina Sinclair defeated Shellita Haughton 7-5, 6-1, Lauren Delapena beat Dejah James 6-1, 6-3, Monique Hanson stopped Nordia Campbell 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 while Shantal Blackwood got by Erica Robertson 6-2, 6-4.
