MOVIE: Something New
RATING:
RUNNING TIME: 1 hr. 40 mins.
BONUS FEATURES: None
WHO'S IN IT: Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker and Blair Underwood.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Kenya, remember me an anal retentive control freak, thinks she has it all - a good career, friends and family. The one thing she can't find is the 'perfect man'. In the pruning process she meets Brian, a landscraper who turns her world upside down. He makes her laugh and takes her out of her shell; the only problem is ... he's white.
Despite trying to assert her blackness and sidestepping Brian at every turn, they can't seem to take their hands off each other. Uncomfortable situations present themselves when the pair has to deal with being an interracial
couple; Kenya's parents and friends make it look like a crime.
Racial complications interrupt the relationship and Kenya meets her perfect black match - enter the ever charming Blair Underwood. The two seem right by society's standards; they are two successful black professionals who speak the same language. Yet Kenya remains unhappy as she faces all the faults in her neat world.
LONG STORY SHORT: The movie attempts to address issues of equality, racism and overcoming great obstacles in love, but fails to do so seriously. It superficially brushes the surface, skipping to the happy ending.
THE REEL LOW-DOWN: If you liked Love and Basketball, you'll like this.
