Sporting Central defeated former Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) team Rivoli United 1-0 at the Rio Cobre playing field in Spanish Town, as action continued in the Super Plus South Central Confed Super League on Sunday.
Former Glenmuir High School star Carnell Learmond netted Sporting Central's lone goal in the second half. Learmond is in the island on Christmas break from his studies at University abroad and gave his local club a nice New Year's present.
Sporting Central from Clarendon are now on seven points from four games, the same as Tafari Lions which came from behind to clip Newland 2-1 at the Lacovia Community Centre in St. Elizabeth.
In a group B match-up at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, Arlington edged Portmore side Dunbeholden 1-0.
In the Tafari Lions/Newlands match-up, goals by Mark Brown (61st) and Marlon Fletcher gave the home team a come from behind 2-1 win against Portmore-based Newland, in which Christopher Harris (38th) scored the visitors' goal.
Newland seemed to be in charge after taking the lead through Harris' strike seven minutes from the interval. But the Lions hit back well with Brown heading home a cross from the right side, then as the game dragged to a draw, Newland goalkeeper Donovan Wright rushed out of his goal and was left stranded when Fletcher got on the end of a loose ball, dribbled several paces then smartly lobbed Wright to give his team all three points.
Tafari Lions' assistant coach, Neil Baker, said his team showed at a lot of heart and guts to come from behind and win the game, while Newland's coach, Michael Small, was disappointed with the result, citing controversial refereeing among other things.
"This game is controversial, the refereeing was poor," said Small.
He added: "Our immaturity cost us the game, we were leading 1-0 and did not defend it well."
